To launch our new science topic on Earth and Space, as well as introduce our space-themed text When We Walked on the Moon by David Long, the children had the exciting opportunity to become astronauts for the day! They took part in a virtual reality workshop, where they donned VR headsets and explored the planets of our solar system. Along the way, they discovered fascinating facts about each planet’s unique features and even selected their favourites. Mrs. Cunnington joined us on our space adventure, making the experience even more memorable!
Our class had a fantastic start to our Life Cycles topic by learning about the different parts of a plant. The children enjoyed dissecting three types of plants, carefully comparing their similarities and differences. They also set up their own investigations to explore asexual reproduction in plants, fostering curiosity and scientific thinking. To wrap up the lesson, some of the children were brave enough to try the leftover celery—though it wasn’t a favourite for everyone!
In science we formed a circle. One child had a cup filled with cubes to represent the battery and another child had an empty cup to represent the bulb. The other children in the circle also had empty cups. As each empty cup was passed to the child representing the battery, they added a cube to the empty cup before passing it on to represent the flow of electrical charge. We were able to see that if the circuit was broken, the flow of electrical charge would stop. We were also able to see that the flow of electrical charge only went in one direction. In the classroom, we recapped our knowledge of the symbols that are used to represent each part of the circuit.
The children had great fun using the ipads to take photos in order to create their own album covers. They had to think very carefully about the composition of their photographs in order to maximise the visual effect.
In our second music lesson we sang the song ‘Moanin’ Lisa Blues’ again. We have got really good at singing those ‘bent’ notes and putting lots of feeling into what we are singing about. We then listened to the 12-bar blues. We learnt that a chord is two or more notes played together. We used the glockenspiels to practise playing the chord of C. We had to make sure that we played the music in time. We found this quite hard at first but, with practise, we got better at it.
