Place Value
In autumn 1 the children in Elm looked at place value. They sorted objects based on colour and size, counted objects from a larger group and learnt how to count on from numbers within 10. They have had lots of practical lessons and have used many concrete materials to support their learning.
Comparing Animals
In science Elm have been looking at the similarities and differences of animals and have been investigating which animal group they belong to. They had fun pretending to be amphibians, birds and fish. They have also been looking at what things carnivores, herbivores and omnivores eat.
How Explorers Changed the World
Elm class loved becoming explorers and searching for new things in our outdoor area. They have learnt about many great explorers such as Ellen MacArthur, Christopher Columbus and Amelia Earhart. The children have explored chronology and how to sequence past events within living memory and beyond in chronological order.
Map It Out
In this art unit the children used pastels to sketch a map of their journey to school. They added buildings, parks, ponds and all of the roads that they see on their route. During the following lesson the children used differed materials to make their map into a 3D piece of art. We put these together to create a class map. It looked amazing! Next we created a map inspired by a stained glass window by using a plastic wallet and cellophane. In the finial lesson the children marked their map designs into a piece of polystyrene, dipped it into their chosen colour of paint and created some beautiful prints in their sketch books.
Being Me In My World
In this PSHE unit the children have spoken about things that make them feel safe and calm. They have looked at calming pictures and learnt some breathing techniques to help relax their minds and bodies. They have learnt about how it feels to belong to something and how this sense of belonging can make everyone feel special. We have looked at how Elm is a safe place as we all have rights, responsibilities and rules to keep everyone safe.
Rainbow Fish
In autumn 1 the children in Elm performed movements and freeze frames based on the story Rainbow Fish. We watched videos of the way starfish move, how seaweed danced in the water and of small fish swimming quickly. We looked at images of spikey rocks and soft corals. The children worked in groups to freeze frame and sequence together these movements. They had the chance to perform them to the class once their pieces were finished.
Gymnastics
The children in Elm have been learning how to do different rolls in gymnastics. They each worked at a different station to demonstrate a pencil, egg, teddy bear and shoulder roll. They have also learnt how to perform different balances and how to share weight whilst balancing with a partner.
