In this Autumn term, we have had a great start as the children have settled into the routines and are developing positive relationships with their peers and adults. The children have had lots of fun as they developed their understanding and explored their learning. Here are some of the things we have done.

Owl Babies

The Owl Babies Story was introduced, over time the children repeated lines from the story and discussed how the owls were feeling. We also watched a video of some owl babies. The children used pom-poms on pegs to create an owl in white paint, they then printed two eyes in black and stuck on a beak and two feet and they told the teacher which owl they had painted – Sarah, Percy or Bill.

Colour Monsters

Colour Monster The children were introduced to the Colour Monster book. We discussed the different emotions and why we may feel them. The children then made mask pieces to demonstrate different moods and they coloured them in match colour of the monsters. The children made a large Colour Monster and used forks and paints as they mark made. In the first part of provision the children were encouraged to use scissors to cut hair styles on different emotions tubes.

Autumn

Autumn We have sung the ‘Four Seasons of the Year’ song with actions. We agreed that the weather is a little confused in Autumn as there can be many types: sunny, frosty, misty, windy, rainy and we used props to represent these types of weathers – a torch, ice, bottle of cloudy water, fan, water spray prospectively. We also looked at signs of Autumn and the children went on an Autumn Hunt and marked the checklists off, they made characters from leaves and painted trees and used cotton buds to print the leaves on.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

The Three Billy Goats Gruff The children have listened to the Three Billy Goats Gruff story, they joined in with repeated refrains, we discussed the emotions that the different characters would have felt through the story and connected this to the different colour monsters. In provision the children were able to re-enact the story and use the vocabulary with the small world figures.

Science Morning

Science Morning We enjoyed joining in with the Science Morning, as we focused on activities that explored our senses. We had a tasting task, where we described the textures of different foods; a smelling activity where the children had to identify the foods, that were in foiled covered cups with a hole in; the children printed their unique finger-prints, we explored coloured ice and saw the murky water that appeared as the ice blocks dissolved. The children also worked with cornflour gloop and felt this different texture. We used magnets to guide cars with paperclips on around the number tracks and outside we did an assault course where we felt our heart before we started and then felt it when we had completed a few circuits.

Maths

Maths Over the term, we have focused on numbers 1, 2 and 3, the children have learnt the rhymes to support the number formation and matched number of objects to the numeral.

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah We have been introduced to the Rosh Hashanah festival that celebrates the Jewish New Year in Autumn. The children learnt there is lots of dancing and we danced to a Jewish song, one of the customs is to eat apples with honey drizzled over it, this is hoping for a sweet new year, we all enjoyed eating these! The Shofar Horn is played throughout the festival and this is to remind people to think about the past year and then look forward to the next and how they can live their lives in a better way. In the first week we made Rosh Hashanah cards and in the second week we made Shofar Horns, which the children enjoyed blowing!

Radish Pods and Seeds

Radish Pods and Seeds We have harvested the pods from the radish bush. The teacher explained that the large bushes had grown from one tiny seed and there were many pods with a number of seeds inside each. Another day the children opened the pods and collected the seeds and discussed how many they had found. This developed the children’s fine motor skills, as well as giving the children knowledge and understanding, we agreed we would plant these seeds in Spring time and we sang the Seasons of the Year song.

Pumpkins

Pumpkins We chose to investigate pumpkins, as it was Halloween. In our first session we looked at the four parts of the pumpkin and did actions for each part: the stem, the skin, the pulp and seeds. The children enjoyed opening the pumpkin and taking out the seeds. We also looked at a world map and globe as we discovered that North America was where pumpkins originally came from. On the last day, the pumpkin we had was not feeling scary enough, so ingredients (vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, glitter, washing up liquid) were added to cause a foam to come through the mouth of the pumpkin.

Halloween

Halloween. This week we have looked at the celebration Halloween, why we celebrate it and what are the customs. The children had a good understanding of the customs and they contributed to the class discussion. We looked at the colours used at this time and the children made Halloween wreathes. The children were very excited to when they discovered that we were going to have a party and they were pleased we were going to dress up! The children had a lovely time in the party as they played games and did lots of dancing.

Clay Workshop

We had a wonderful time in the Clay Workshop with Andrew, he showed us how to shape clay and decorate it using the different tools.

The Three Little Pigs

We have heard the story of The Three Little Pigs, the children did at story map with actions and finally acted the story out in the outdoors after building the three houses. In class the children did mark-making as they learnt how to draw the pigs using pastel crayons. They enjoyed the small world area as they retold the story. The children used lots of repeated refrains as they participated in the retelling of the story.

There was a fun opportunity to explore ice and watch how it melted as it warmed up. The children helped make different flavoured ice-creams and we discussed how it would freeze. The children thoroughly enjoyed eating the ice cream cones.

Police Visit

We came back into Saplings class to find a crime scene...someone had destroyed our home corner. It was a clue of who was coming to visit.....

THE POLICE!

We heard the noise of the police cars and motorbikes and rushed out to see them. We had a go at pretending to be arrested, practised using the speed gun and watched Mrs Southern be handcffed into the back of the police car. What a great way to start our new topic; People Who Help Us.

Pancake Day

After reading Mr Wolf's Pancakes we realised we needed to create a shopping list to help us remember the ingrediends needed. We used our phonics to identify initial sounds - we were great at doing this as a group together.

Next was the fun part - mixing the ingredients and cooking. Mrs Goldson was great at fipping the pancakes! And the best bit...tasting them!
